Review: Rob Thomas ‘Chip Tooth Tour’
Did someone say, “David Bowie biopic?” Well, let me be the first to throw Rob Thomas’ name in the ring to take on the “Starman.” The former Matchbox 20 – aka “the greatest pop rock band of all time” as he calls it – frontman brought his “Chip Tooth Tour” to Highland Park, Illinois’ Ravinia Festival June 6 to promote his fourth solo studio album Chip Tooth Smile.
Along with stellar, enthusiastic performances of his 20 plus years of hits – which included “3A.M.,” “Smooth,” and “I Love It” – Thomas covered the late David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” to a dazzled audience. The singer, songwriter, pianist and guitarist put on a thunderous two hour performance, offering up a little bit of country, a little bit of rock n roll and a lot of uplifting energy.
“Celebrate life!” he proclaimed.
Highlights included a stripped down piano version of “Little Wonders” from Disney’s Meet the Robinsons, and a soulful rendition of “When You’re Gone.” Up and coming country superstar Abby Anderson opened the show with her funk meets country stylings. Among her set, the Dallas-born sultry songstress delivered a chilling cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams.”
