Review: Roseanne Barr’s “Alive & Kickin’ Tour”

Roseanne Barr brought her “Alive & Kickin’ Tour” to Fort Wayne, Indiana’s Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, Thursday May 16. Admittedly, I half expected Barr to come out on a cannon, akin to Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time Video.”

Instead, the Emmy and Golden Globe winning actress, author and presidential candidate took the audience on a day-in-the-life, high-camp trip, touching on everything from incest, entitled children, religion, aging, sex, life in Hawaii, her love of Investigation Discovery, Kim Kardashian’s butt, and of course – her love of the gays.

“I recently performed on a gay cruise,” Barr elated. “Boy, the Captain really goes down with that ship.”

It’s no secret she has been a champion for the LGBT community. Roseanne was at the forefront, including one of network TV’s first same sex female kiss and making history as the first American television series to depict the same-sex wedding of a recurring character.

“I’ve very pro-gay marriage…and divorce.”

She did touch on politics and her support for Trump, briefly, adding, “The only time [politicians] are telling the truth is when they’re calling each other liars.”

Barr is definitely in her element on stage. The tour marks a return to her stand-up roots. The 66 year old comedian’s sharp tongue and quick wit are still intact, complete with a little vulgarity and wisdom. She discussed aging away from Hollywood and learning to “have a lower tolerance for bullshit.”

“All these drugs for depression – don’t you think we’re supposed to be depressed?!”

Barr didn’t shy away from sharing her distress, after being fired and killed off a show she created. She divulged that she did find herself suicidal but found a healthy way – ala Investigation Discovery – to channel her anguish. She penned letters to anyone who had crossed her, including one to ABC, which included her disdain toward their “ignorance” of killing off her character – a character many of us considered our TV mom and looked up to – with an opioid overdose.

“I ain’t the one that’s dead, bitches!”
