The Parliament House Footlight Theatre presents ‘Zanna, Don’t! | April 15 – 30, 2016’

ZannaDont

Welcome to Heartsville High, set in a world where everyone is gay–well, almost everyone! The big-man-on-campus is the chess champion, and the captain of the football team is made cool by being cast as the lead in the school musical. The students write a controversial show called “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” about straight people in the military, which becomes the catalyst for a young man and woman to fall in love. Enter Zanna, a magical, musical fairy who, with a wave of his wand, brings true love to one and all! But at what cost?

As the Parliament House Footlight Theatre continues to expand it’s program, the newest production features a stellar cast of local performers: Kayla Alvarez, Alexander Browne*, Noa Carmel, Luis Diaz, Adam DelMedico, Mike Van Dyke, Marissa Volpe and Matthew Walker.

*Alexander Browne appears courtesy of Actors’ Equity Association.

This show is directed by the Footlight Theatre’s Artistic Director Tim Evanicki,  choreographed by Keith Wilson, and musical directed by John T. Gardner, who will lead a live 4-piece band featuring Laurie Marsell (Guitar), Nathan May (Bass) and Jesus Aponte (Drums). The production is stage managed by Chris McCabe, with Technical Director Christopher T. Guy and special effects consultant Terry M. Gianotsos.

About Zanna, Don’t!
Written by Tim Acito, “Zanna Don’t!” opened off-broadway in 2003 starring Jai Rodriquez (Queer Eye for the Straight Guy), as the magical matchmaker Zanna. The title of the show was originally inspired by the film Xanadu, because Acito originally envisioned the lead character on roller skates, and Acito wanted to pay homage to the film. But, the roller-skating idea was soon dropped. Nevertheless, “Zanna, Don’t” is a loving tribute to pop culture, and Acito thought a reference to Xanadu would be appropriate. It sort of represents the best and – many would argue – the worst of pop culture.

With an underlying theme of love an acceptance of all, even straight people, “Zanna, Don’t!” is a sure-fire crowd-pleaser for anyone and everyone in the audience.
