TLC Launches Kickstarter Campaign to Fund Final Album

The iconic R&B band, now made up of surviving members Tianne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, is returning to the studio one last time. According to a Kickstarter campaign launched last month, the duo says on the page, “We wouldn’t dream of making our final album with anyone BUT our fans. Come on y’all, BE A PART OF TLC HISTORY!” The group that brought you the hits “Waterfalls,” “Creep,” & “No Scrubs”  says the album, due out in September, will be relevant, stay true to the TLC sound, and confront real issues and life experiences. Lady Gaga is rumored to be featured on the album. The group’s last album was 2003’s 3-D.

So, why a Kickstarter campaign?
Despite selling over 50 million albums, TLC has suffered very public money struggles, but the Kickstarter page didn’t necessarily come out of financial constraints. The duo explains on the page that it is due to wanting to control their own music, have fan input, and not have to deal with major record labels.

New Kids On The Block donated $10,000 and Katy Perry donated $5,000. As of Feb. 2, the campaign has raised more than $257,000 of their $150,000 goal.

The duo kicks off a US Tour later this month with Nelly and The New Kids on the Block.
